Festival Schedule and Guest Speakers

The Paris Area Chamber of Commerce and Mt. Magazine International Butterfly Festival Committees take great pride in their choice of guest speakers. Our committees are constantly looking for the best in the field and we believe we have found them. Make a trip to the festival and we believe you will be as pleased with them as we are.

The schedule is constantly being updated and will be until the actual day of the festival, so be sure to check back for the latest events. Dates, times and events listed below are for this year's Festival.

With factors such as temperature and light, morning is typically the best time to photograph butterflies and wildflowers. Meet in front of the Visitor Center to learn some practical photography tips from Don Simons, Arkansas Butterflies and Moth photographer. (2 hours)

Our future flies on the wings of pollinators! Petal-pushing Master Gardners will lead garden tours of pollinator joy and larval dreams. Meet on the Visitor Center back patio. (30 minutes)
75 Reasons to Love Butterflies and Moths
Butterflies enrich our lives in several ways. This is the 75th anniversary of Arkansas State Parks! This program celebrates the park's Lepidoptera, looking at full-color reasons to love these creatures. (30 minutes) An Arkansas Butterflies and Moths book signing will follow.

Phase Two
Before it can become an adult, each butterfly and moth must be a caterpillar. Some are good, some bad, and each with its own unique, sometimes bizarre story. Because there are thousands of caterpillars, only a few can be covered in this program in the Vistor Center A/V room. (30-45 minutes)

How many legs does an insect have? What is Arkansas's state insect? How do insects fit into our culture? Test your insect IQ during this quiz game for prizes in the Visitor Center A/V room.  (30 minutes) **designed for upper elementary kids and up

Garden Tours
From Giant to Purple Coneflowers, from Mountain Mint to Wood Mint, you'll find something to love about the Visitor Center Garden. Master Gardeners will lead garden tours every 30 minutes until 12:00 noon. Meet on the Visitor Center back patio.
"Nature Station Rotation" Walks
Perching, patrolling butterflies using host and nectar plants are highlights of four stations. Volunteers will lead small groups to nature stations manned by the Forest Service and park interpreters every 15 minutes. Meet at the Will Apple's Road trailhead near the visitor Center. (2 hours)

The monarch butterfly, truly without borders, captures our attention each year with its spectacular migration. Enjoy a program about monarchs on Mount Magazine in the Diana banquet room in the lodge. (30 minutes) The Bug Jar Raffle Winner will be announced following this program! An Arkansas Butterflies and Moths book signing will follow.

Toucan Jam in concert
"Changes, we can make 'em, if we choose to. It's up to me and you." The chorus from one of Toucan Jam's popular songs is a perfect culmination to the festival. Join us in the Diana banquet room of the lodge for an energetic concert complete with puppetry and instruments from around the world. Though designed mainly for children, adults will enjoy the music, too! (1 1/2 to 2 hours)
